Spy on your competitors – Opt for social media marketing

There is a lot of fuss regarding social media marketing these days as an increasingly large number of people are becoming users of various social networking websites. If you’re interested in online marketing and you want to boost the profit of your website, you should embrace social media marketing as this is the only way in which you can contact a large audience. Are you aware of the benefits of social media marketing and about the different social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn? If answered no, you have to educate yourself on them so that you can reap the benefits of this amazing media and thereby increase your profits.

1)Pitch the products in a more humane way: Since the people log in to the social networking websites for keeping in touch with their friends and family members, you must not subject them to bombarding ads. Rather discuss about your products in a friendly manner so that you can engage them in a conversation with you through which you can promote your products and services. Ask them their opinions about the product and tell them to give their feedback.

2)Boost the customer trust and loyalty: The social networking websites are a place that is always trusted by most users and if you have a profile in the most famous websites like Facebook and Twitter, this will automatically boost the credibility and authenticity of your website and this will also boost the amount of traffic that is being generated to your website.

3)You can listen to your customer’s opinion: When you open a business of your own and you make a website, you must try and know the exact ways in which your customers react to it. As your customers often visit the social networking websites, you can track their behavior by going through their wall posts and chatting with them. You will come to know if your customer appreciates the products and services provided by you and also if they criticize them. You can take further steps to improve the products based on the decisions of the customers.

4)Conduct market research: Another important thing that you can do is to conduct a market research so that you get to know what the competitors are doing and thereby tweak the product and service to please your audience. Make sure you’re using the best internet marketing techniques to improve the visibility of your business website.

Therefore, when you want to grab the highest number of eyeballs for your online business website, you have to opt for social media marketing. Set up a commercial profile in any of the social networking website and continue promoting your products in a friendly manner. Social media marketing will always have a positive impact on your website and assist you in making better returns.

My 90 day experiment into Affiliate marketing (cash made)

My company Netmediauk Limited A.K.A. Netmediathailand my Online Marketing training business, was born out of the need to be free to travel abroad as and when I want. I hated the days when a boss told me when and where (by my salary) I can take a vacation. I began working online in 2005 out of my beach condo in Thailand, and before you think that sounds like a boast, I can tell you I scraped by for 4 years and sold my house in UK to survive, and a beach Condo in Thailand was less than £10,000 in 2004 when the baht was 70 to the pound!. The business meandered down various paths till it became what it is today. I now train companies in UK and the Far East to understand Facebook for business, blogging, and how social media affects SEO, etc.

Having 31 websites out there, over half of them first page google for the keywords, I looked deeper into how these little ‘ads down the side’ of your sites work and pay, and again I dreamed of giving up the Internet marketing training business, and receiving £1000 per/month just of these ads. Seemed all I had to do was a blog or two a day, maybe 4 hours work, then I could spend the rest of my days sitting on a tropical beach having a dusky beauty put grapes in my mouth.

Every good salespersons sells on emotion, and I was pulled in by the hype. My biggest lesson is that like network marketing companies, the ‘dream’ is an undisputed truth, however the reality is that the margin of people really making decent money purely online is minuscule! SEO and social media is a must now for business and every company should be trained to bring more people to their site and therefore expose their products and services to the internet, but just to live of online profits from a website you run from home really is a not impossible but very much a distant dream!

I read as much as I can before I solicited my sites for the ‘ads down the side’, Google ads need to see your great great Grannies DNA sample before you are approved, and many top SEO people wince when I suggested it. Commission junction one of the top affiliation sites is struggling, and Clickbank was one I have tried recently.

In August I added Clickbank ads to all 31 sites I have, each of the sets of ads was in-keeping with the theme of my sites, and I blog at least once a month on all of them. So average is 1,000 unique a month / per site. I also researched into numbers of unique clicks to sales; IE how much traffic you need on average to get a sale. The results were that until the beginning of the year, most people who used online affiliates were seeing 1/100 so, if your site had 1,000 unique visitors p/m, you got approx.10 sales. However three months of Clickbank 31,000 unique per/month x 3 months, almost 100,000 unique visits over 31 sites, amount of sales…. a big fat zero!

I have since been approved by confused.com a £700 Million UK insurance brokerage for my biggest site cheapesttravelinginsurance.com a travel blog for anyone to submit their holiday stories and pictures for free, and since that is my biggest site at an average 5,000 unique a month. I had to jump through a number of loops to get this, but I have already started to see a difference in sales. So association with the branded big boys can’t be a bad thing.

Making a living from affiliates

Like anything making money online is like a career, you start off as the ‘tea maker’ but slowly you are introduced to the tasks of the business a few months later you are given a few responsibilities and if you cope well you get noticed by your superiors as someone with integrity and tenacity and you get on the next rung. Internet marketing is no different it is a skill to learn like any other business and a few universities are giving it a ‘label’ or at least adding it as a vital component in any media or Marketing course.

I did the research and used my own sense to get the figures I needed to have a target to make the grade, here is what I found:

You first have to have your own blog with a domain you own, I recently spoke at a Rotary meeting and prior to the talk I researched the top websites to keep on top of what’s going on in the netosphere, and was actually surprised to find blogger.com in the top ten! You don’t have to own any domain to open a blogger.com blog; you choose a name like blogger.com/…….. And that’s your blog. I had almost forgotten about my own Blogger.com account, I started my online writing life out here, and was as amazed as anyone who finds a photo album you thought you lost for years and reminisced about my days growing up as an Internet marketer in Bangkok. You can’t really add any of your own money making affiliate advertisements to Blogger, you can just blog, great business idea when you think about it: Blogger has the rights to the ads and you do all the content and content is everything to get rank!

bni presntation

bni presntation

So you have your own domain and a hosting account then you build your site, this is really the easiest bit, Word Press and Joomla have millions of free templates and you can change the header pictures without too much difficulty either through the admin panels or through your hosting account cpanel, I traded some work with a BNI colleague for him to teach me this two years ago

I now have 31 websites, 25 of which I have seen first page on Google for the keywords, many I rent out to companies and I make the money of the ads, and they do the blogs and are the main contacts.

Success in online marketing is all about work rate and content. Google now knows a spam, copied or plain inane website blog made just to capture keywords, I know one of the Google algorithms now uses semantics to see how many word variations of terms you have used in your blog <so now I have used the other two variations I will now use ‘Digital marketing’ to prove the point, so I have now online, internet and digital marketing all in this blog without writing pointlessly>

Ok, so you have a domain name, a website, you publish rich interesting content and you use all your social media to get decent unique visitors, and to get decent Social media reach takes a couple of years too. If you are serious about wanting to work from home and provide for yourself and a family you have to get your head down for at least 8 hours a day, so nice with no boss, but many of us need a boss or we just don’t get stuff done! 8 hours a day is enough time to have 4 websites and 4 decent blogs to write about. When you are more established you can get other people to write guest posts on all your sites and walk off into the sunset!

Now to the ads, this is where you get paid for your work, unless you are blogging to send to your company website which is just as good. Just Google the term ‘affiliates’ and you will find a plethora of decent affiliate companies and some affiliate comparison sites too, so you can read about the good bad and the ugly!

I really needed a bar to go on what I can aim for so I can schedule the hours and the days weeks and months to get to a level where the number of people who come to my website, is then a ratio to how many will buy from the ads then what’s the average order value of ads so I can see if and how long it took before I could make a living online.

Google ads and Clickbank are two of the most popular ads you can add to your website and I find Clickbank pay more, with an average of twenty USD per sale! Clickbank are a lot easier to deal with in my opinion and you choose the keywords for their ads to fit into your theme of your blog so more targeting. (This figure has dropped quite a bit though due to the world recession)

In my research I found that most people saw 1 sale per hundred unique visitors to their sites I personally assume that this is for more established sites of a couple of years older and more, and due to the recession, so for a newbie I’d say 1 in 250 unique visitors to your site will end up in a sale.

To gain the unique visitors you will have this information from your hosting account, now many, too many blogs, and questions have been asked about the accuracy of hosting accounts numbers of visitors and Google analytics, and real nerds can go on about caching and files for days, it really is frustrating because everyone who blogs wants a true idea of who’s reading them. I find Google analytics too strict, but AW stats from say Hostgator are too soft. I don’t have the time, so to alleviate my brain I take the hosting account numbers and take Google analytics numbers (which on average is a third of what your hosting account tells you!) add them together and divide by two then take that figure divide by two hundred and fifty (ratio of unique visitors to sales) then times by 20 dollars= payday!

For example 10,000 unique visitors to your website (Hosting account info)

Google analytics will be around 3,000,

Add them together= 13,000 divide by 2= 6500 unique visitors mean average.

6500 divided by 250 (sales ratio to unique visitors) =26 sales x $20

Pay day $520 a month

So if you have 4 websites and you toil 8 hours a day on them and you have a decent Social Media which you have gleaned from at least 2 years of sucking up to people on Facebook and have a decent  Facebook company page and Twitter account, 1500-2000 USD a month can be achieved.

Working from home

Working from home

I find I can do a decent blog edited, with images in 2 hours each (again of you can get good guest writers you are on a winner) I do two in the morning and two in the evening over 5-6 days a week! I have the afternoons off; you will need a break for sure!

Sex, Videos, and Beach belles (Vote for yours)

Ok so you’ve done your keywords after finding all the best ones on Google keywords, you’ve then added them to your site and then done a Facebook page, a Twitter account and a Google map for your business? You’ve spent a lot of time adding your site to Directories, and you’ve been bookmarking on all the top sites Digg, stumbleupon, reddit, pinging etc? You have also done a few Press releases and set up a Press room, and have been cleaning your local ‘education councilors’ car every weekend for a month for that all important .edu link?  Fantastic then you have been a fine scholar of all my blogs. One last thing, ….your  Video.

Why Video, well because people love video.  People will watch almost 4 minutes of video on average as compared to less than a minute of reading a text website.   If you have not already started using video in your marketing you should. Video captures the visual learner, when you combine sound, motion graphics, human elements and dynamic storyline; you engage your visitors and influence them.  Video tells a story that the written word alone cannot. And it can be done very inexpensively indeed!

The Video is a quintessential part of your website optimization and must be taken seriously. Even if you have run a video off your cheap phone camera it’s better than not having a video. Every one of the top viral videos with literally millions of hits, nobody cared that it was not done in a studio with all the correct lighting, it was just fun. So don’t think you can just set up your webcam, talk in a monologue for 15 mins, and then be an internet sensation and appear on the television next week, you got to make it compellingly interesting or at the very least funny,…….. or Sexy. read on…

I recently ran an advert on Facebook for models to send me their pictures in a Bikini (Oh why I never thought of this before I will kick myself forever) and what a fun few weeks it was opening up the wonderful ladies Jpegs. And I knew that all my hard work over the years networking and meeting people and getting them to my Facebook profile and being a contact, so I had 5,000 contacts really really helped my cause. And I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who sent in their pics I am finally making my video for my travel website at last.

The company I use is really cost effective for videos in Thailand. (email me for rates)

Picture the scene it’s a beach (green screen) and then our intrepid beach belle romps around the video in her bikini, I mean what else do you wear on a beach? Here she explains all about the benefits of the website.

Now this is where I need your help, as I have narrowed the models down to just three finalists, and I can’t pick, …..so please help me pick a winner.

So here are the girls:

Kanyarat from Bangkok

Kanyarat

Kanyarat

Piya  from Bangkok

Piya

Nang Mod from Buriram

Nang

All the models have given written permission for me to use their pics (obviously)  so please vote for your favourite Beach belle by clicking on the images of the model you wish to win the contract, and leaving a post for them on the Facebook page.  I am sure they would all appreciate your vote, and then they will appear in my video and be paid handsomely for their time. I will let you see the video when done, it would be so mean not to ….

Social Media on the rise but where?

Comscore a leading digital measuring website and company told us that of the countries: Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. Vietnam has seen the fastest penetration on social Media activities with a year on year growth of 35% of which 66% growth was recorded in 2010.

Philippinos are clocking up 95% Malaysia 91% Indonesia 91% penetration of website traffic from those countries engaging in Social Media. Facebook was a prime reason for this growth. The Phillipino’s love Facebook so much they have knocked Google off the No 1 spot. That lovely Philippina you chat online too is so typical of the average that spends 7 hours a month on Facebook alone.

Twitter is reaching Asia too with Indonesians and Singaporeans now seeing what it can do for quick information and these two countries are in the top 15 markets for Twitter. Indonesians clocked up a massive 21% of the countries web traffic visiting the site making it the fourth market worldwide.

Overall growth in 2009-2010 grew from 67.6%to 70.5 % also these people spent more time on Social Media sites in 2010 than they did in 2009 from 11% to 16%

Email and Instant messaging use fell in the same period IM was the most dramatic seeing 5% percent less traffic in the same period!

Email fun

Photo sharing increased 10% adding more of a dimension to the experience Flicker grew considerably. And more and more people upload directly and instantly from mobile phone cameras.

E commerce is rising across all these six countries apart from H.K. and S’pore with no significant rise. Sites like traveling sites offering cheap flights and budget Hotels saw real growth.

Are Facebook ads effective, and are they expensive?

After Having my Facebook ‘suggest to friends’ feature Knobbled by Facebook, it works for admin’s of 2500 friends or less, and I am sure anyone else with over 2,500 friends can not suggest to friends, (I smell a conspiracy here)  I decided to research into Facebook advertising after all they stand to make BIG because how else can you get thousands to ‘LIKE’ your company page if you are not Red Bull!?

If you are Unfamiliar with Facebook ads, these are the ads down the right hand side of the page and they should coincide with what you have said you are interested in. If you are a Basketball fan and all you get is English Soccer ads then you need to go to your interests and update them. So to start an ad and see how much they will charge you, you go to your Facebook fan/company page and there you can initiate an advertisement. In the top right corner, don’t worry you can go all the way without paying, to see what a click will cost in your business arena. I recently ran through it and a click for Cheapest traveling Insurance was around 2 USD!!

But are they successful? Are you going to fork out cash and it backfire in your face? Well, the research online says maybe:  With over 1 trillion display ads on Facebook which is twice…er …three times,.. er, how many zeros in trillion?? As many as Yahoo with 529 Billion, Facebook saw 11,000 campaigns 4.5 billion impressions and 2.2 million clicks through. And it appears it’s only effective around half of the time with a 0.051 CTR compared to traditional banner ads in 2009-2010. Also the price of an ad sky rocketed to an average 49c US.

Out of all my research I also found out that the biggest clickers of ads were woman aged 27-49 and Media and Entertainment was the most effective followed by ecommerce and then Travel.  It made me wonder ..If travel was 2 USD a click how much is Entertainment?  Personally that does not make me want to fork out hard cash I will have to continue to annoy my friends to get that damned unique URL!

So it seems the best way to get people to like your page has been the trusted Social Media, as in tell your friends and for the companies with the pages to be competitive and worth talking about! And of course my own personal favorite for a fast turn around is a mail out to targeted people, through a company with targeted double opt in lists!

What’s the difference between a blog and a press release?

Two essential parts of your Online marketing campaign, both do the same job which is driving traffic back to your website, both are content rich and hopefully well written. Both are picked up by Google, sometimes Press releases can be picked up in Hours rather than days. Both have archives as in a Press room where all your previous articles are held, so someone who reads your article can see your past articles too.

So what’s the main difference?

Blogs are personal, they come from the heart and the best ones are the ones where you feel you have never read this info before, and us bloggers can sense a ‘well spun’ article, we all do them, but you can not spin information without having a deeper understanding about the subject, it’s like going back to school you learn so much from researching other articles for information for your blog. However to prove the point this blog is coming straight off my head.

Press releases on the other hand are favoured by Google, they are expecting news and facts from it, so it ranks above a blog, and because of the keywords you add in to Press releases, it’s easier for Google to see, (Robots are essentially lazy, they look for the easy way out, if your info is laid out easy for them, the better for you, so they can get back to Google’s cozy office and sit on a bouncy ball and feed the fish, whatever). Press releases are written differently, try to imagine you have an Editors cap on big cigar bellowing at your staff (ok the imagination has run riot, just get a shot of Spiderman will you). It a news article and it has to be written like a magazine or a newspaper article. It should be less personal and with stated facts. Interviews work well. Interview your subject, get their personal story, but remember as the writer it’s not about you.

What the hell is Twitter? (Beginners guide)

Still so many people ask me this when I am out teaching and sharing the joys and ROI of Social Media Marketing. And with all these applications to increase activity and tweets, many have just lost the plot so I thought today I would produce a real

Twitter for dummies.’ So is our lap top on? You are sat in front and the screen (the bit with the picture on) then we will begin.

TwitterBird

TwitterBird

Twitter is a social media marketing tool, however it is different from Facebook or Linkedin in that there are no pictures or videos in the basic site, and a very limited profile. You have a box wherein you can post a message which is 140 characters or less. Your main aim is to have many people following you so that they listen to your message herein known as a ‘Tweet’ Imagine for a second you have just wrote the God of all blogs and you are desperate for people to see it, if you had 10,000 followers on Twitter then you would just write

“I have a cure for the common cold <link to your blog> “

That’s it! Twitter (when you have many followers) is like putting an advertisement in your local/National newspaper. However this is ‘instant and the good thing is you can put as many tweets as you like.

So how do you get many followers on Twitter?

So many applications promising this, promising that, at the end of the day if you want a job doing properly do it yourself, and I am here to tell you if you are not Justin Beiber or Obama or someone Famous or infamous, then you are up against it there really is no quick fix like anything!

Justin Bieber Twitter

Justin Bieber Twitter

You start by following others and this is the pivotal point

Only follow people whom you feel their posts would be of interest to you!

The Twitter etiquette is that birds of a feather … people will get a message from Twitter informing them that you have followed them, most, not all, but most will take a quick look at your profile to see who is following them, and follow you back after all you are in a similar interest sphere! This is essentially Twitter!

If you do this then each day, all the Tweets from the people whom you are following will appear on your wall, and you should find them of interest, and you will more that likely want to follow a link or retweet (Retweet means their tweet will appear on your wall, so your followers can see it. Imagine your Tweet you did earlier for the common cold, some guy with 50,000 followers likes your article (he has a cold and feels rough) and retweets,  then your link will explode with one click, see where this is going? And all this is FREE!! Premium is TIME!

When you start Twitter there is a handy Search box at the top where you can add keywords, so if you for example are a ‘Bird watcher’ put in ornithology in the search box, and anyone who has that keyword in their profile or recent tweets, will show up, there may be many and you can try many different keywords for your interests. Open up each one, read their profile (If you don’t you may end up following people who consider bird watching as eyeing up the local talent in the pub!) if their profile sounds like someone who’s tweets you would be interested in, click the follow button, and all their tweets forever more you will see on your wall if you are logged in at the time!

One more fine thing is try to make your tweets of value to your followers, they read your profile and they expect just that, don’t tell people you are on the loo or going to your Yoga class unless you want to reduce your followers remember it’s just one button to un-follow as it is to follow!

Broadcast

Broadcast

That really is it.

It’s taken me 18 months to scrape near to 1000 followers but that is growing and not going down. and when I am struggling for a topic for my blog, I go to my Twitter and as I have followed only people of my interest sphere I find myself on Twitter following many links and retweeting others as it is a world of useful info for me, and it shall be for you if you ignore the hype of thousands of followers from various applications and do it yourself, that way you will know who you are following and they will be so much more inclined to follow you back!

How to effectively target with the new Facebook page

How do you know your people in your page are targeted members and not just ‘making up the numbers?’

One way is activity, if you joined a page inadvertently and every day you get a message about something you are truly not interested in, you will go in to that page and leave (unlike) most would.

Facebook stratergies

Facebook stratergies

A good page, as in a page with a majority of interested members, fluctuates weekly, as people come and people go, this is good, as it shows people are engaging, reading, and understanding what your company is about

Red Bull the biggest page on Facebook (15 million plus fans!!!) are awesome at engaging their audience, as they create high action online games, after a game you feel like you want to  run outside and jump over barrels, and guess what you need some of their drink to get that high!

Insights, Facebook tells you in a regular email about your page(s) who is actively looking at your page. Again I have mentioned this before don’t worry if you are not getting commented on all the time, yes comments are good and Google collect the info and score you higher for more interaction, and if you have 40 staff they should all be on Facebook lauding your posts, asking questions, but for those of us who do not have 40 paid commenters! Don’t worry ask your self did you write off to the company who advertised on your local TV station about their ad that you watched?  No of course not, but you saw it, and the message was transmitted to you, same as your posts, people do read/see them, so be consistent and be personal, funny, controversial, question them, and this is essentially branding you

My Insights email for this week:

Now with the new ‘profile style’ Facebook page it is going to be easier to get you message out there. Facebook really want to push the virtues of using pages as a media for your business as this will for them segment everyone better and make their advertising more targeted.

Please don’t forget, I am really pushing this message home:

A vanity URL (memorable web address as Facebook calls it) is worth a lot, and it is like a domain once you have it no-one else can claim it, once you have 25 likes, got to Facebook.com/username and claim your URL it’s free no one else can have mine:  it is facebook.com/netmediathailand easy to remeber eh? and you look professional giving it to someone in business! Everyones profile has the same feature too, but alas  not groups.

Now you go to Account (top right) and switch to your page, you then are actively using your page as your profile! Don’t worry that you can switch back to your personal profile anytime; we have already tried this for you, the first time you do this it’s like:

“Oh I hope this works I don’t want to be known as Bob’s Pancakes forever’

Now you can read someone else’s posts say Franks Coffee and comment as Bob’s Pancakes see where this is going? This can be really effective if you share on related posts. It won’t be long before we see the first ‘howlers’ like Mike’s Pork store commenting on someone’s Hanukkah photos!! Remember what profile you are in!! Just keep it related and remember where you comments are going.

The designers amongst us are going to be using the Logo and combing all the photos in a block to great effect to make a cool advertising message across all the pictures. And I am sure someone is laboring over an application for this as we speak.

Is Social Media successful? These top 500 US companies tell all!

Social Media Marketing is growing period. Right across the board 2010 saw remarkable growth across all Social Media sectors, as this University of Massachusetts Datrtmouth centre for research shows they asked the Inc 500 which is the fastest growing US companies about their marketing.  No surprise Facebook and Twitter the top two sources. Facebook pages seem to have really caught on and companies finding the freedom to solicit their wares as a great way to find new clients.

Although Facebook has seen massive growth recently. It is only part of an overall campaign and isn’t as effective as Blogging or at least Message boards.

Mraket research

For me a Social Media Marketing campaign always starts with a Blog or a message, and Facebook Twitter Linkedin and other Book-marking sites are effective for driving people to your message. And you have to have been busy for the last 18 months building a decent friends list/database or your message won’t be heard. Many of my clients write a blog and I do the rest for them posting and pinging.

It confuses me that I have recently posted about the number of companies who don’t have a Social Media campaign, like only 16% of all companies in Thailand are using Social Media Marketing. However this chart clearly shows that of the respondents they asked the vast majority saw it as somewhat or very important. Seems every wants to go to heaven but no one wants to die!

market research

Why are some companies averse to using Social Media? I think many old value style companies can not see how a ‘bunch of kids’ telling each other where they are going to party tonight, can help them with selling their basic wares. I mean their 20 strong Sales force with company cars and expense accounts, costing over 1 million bucks a year are doing just fine aren’t they?

But these kids are tomorrows home buyers and consumers, regardless of what you sell you can do no harm whatsoever for the longevity of your brand by letting these ‘bunch of kids’ know who you are, and it seems the most competitive companies have already been doing so for a few years now!
